The Anchoring Effect
Anchoring happens when an initial number or piece of information influences later judgment more than it should.
Imagine seeing a jacket originally priced at $300 and discounted to $180. The $300 figure becomes a reference point, so $180 may immediately feel like a bargain. But the original price does not prove that the jacket is worth $180.
Recent research has shown how persistent this effect can be. A 2026 meta-analysis covering 2,601 effect sizes found a substantial overall anchoring effect, with a Hedges' g of 0.825.
Anchoring can appear in:

· property prices;
· discounts;
· financial forecasts;
· estimates of time and cost;

A useful countermeasure is simple: before accepting the first number as meaningful, ask what independent evidence supports it.
Confirmation Bias
Confirmation bias works differently. Instead of being influenced mainly by the first information, we tend to give more attention to information that agrees with what we already believe.
Suppose someone believes a particular investment is going to succeed. After buying it, they may actively search for positive news while paying less attention to warnings. Every favorable article then appears to strengthen the original decision.
The same pattern can occur in ordinary arguments. Two people can read the same information and notice completely different details because their expectations determine what attracts their attention.
A practical defense is to deliberately ask:
“What evidence would prove that I am wrong?”
If the answer is “nothing,” the problem may not be a lack of evidence but a lack of willingness to challenge the original assumption.
Availability: Memorable Does Not Mean Likely
Another common mental shortcut is the availability heuristic. People often estimate how frequent or probable something is by how easily examples come to mind.
A dramatic event that happened yesterday can feel more common than a routine event that happens thousands of times but receives little attention.
This distinction is important. Easy recall can sometimes reflect real frequency, but it can also be caused by recency, emotional intensity, personal experience or repeated exposure. Therefore, vividness is not automatically evidence of probability.
A better question is:
“How often does this actually happen among all relevant cases?”
That forces the brain to look for a denominator instead of relying on the strongest memory.
The Gambler's Fallacy
Random events create another particularly interesting trap.
Imagine a fair coin has landed heads five times in a row. Many people feel that tails is now “due.” But if the coin is genuinely fair, the probability of tails on the next independent toss remains 50%.
A 2025/2026 review of statistical judgment found evidence that people can systematically misjudge sequences of random events, including the classic gambler's fallacy and mistakes caused by ignoring sample size.
This is why a sequence of previous outcomes should not automatically be treated as evidence that the next independent outcome must compensate for them.
The brain wants patterns. Randomness often provides none.
Why One Success Can Be Misleading
Imagine trying a new strategy once and getting an excellent result. The immediate temptation is to conclude that the strategy works.
But one observation tells us very little.
Consider a hypothetical strategy with a 10% chance of producing an unusually good result on any attempt. Seeing that result once does not establish that the strategy is reliable. It may simply be the outcome of variance.
The same principle works in reverse. A good strategy can produce a bad result, especially over a small sample.
This is why larger samples are generally more informative than isolated experiences. Ten observations provide more information than one, while 1,000 observations can reveal patterns that remain invisible in a handful of cases.
How to Outsmart Your Own Shortcuts
Completely eliminating cognitive biases is unrealistic. A better objective is to recognize situations in which they are likely to become influential.
Before making an important decision, try five quick checks:
1. What was my first assumption?
2. Am I giving too much importance to one number?
3. Am I searching only for information that supports me?
4. Am I confusing a memorable event with a frequent event?
5. Would I reach the same conclusion if the information were presented differently?
These questions take less than a minute but can interrupt automatic thinking.
Turning Awareness Into an Advantage
Cognitive biases are not proof that the human brain is defective. They are often side effects of mechanisms that evolved to make thinking faster and more efficient.
The goal is therefore not to stop using intuition. It is to know when to slow down.
When the stakes are low, a mental shortcut can save time. When money, safety, health or major decisions are involved, an additional check can be extremely valuable.
The most useful skill is not trying to predict everything perfectly. It is recognizing when your own brain may be presenting a convenient story instead of an accurate picture of reality. Once that distinction becomes familiar, uncertainty becomes easier to handle, decisions become more deliberate and mistakes become opportunities to improve the way we think.
